More Pro.Lifers Collect Seats in Washington, D. C. -- The pro-life movement captured two more Senate seats and retained a solid, though diminished, House majority in the recent elections. Pro-life Republican Chic Hecht unseated pro-abortion Senator Howard Cannon tD- NV) while, half a continent away, Rep. Paul Trible (R- VA) was winning his bid to succeed outgoing Senator Harry Byrd (I-VA). Byrd compiled a consistently pro- abortion record during his Senate tenure. The Hecht and Trible vic- tories boosted pro-life strength in the Senate, a body that is sharply divided over the abortion issue. Last September, the Senate shelved a bill which sought a comprehensive ban on federal subsidy of abortion and a speedy high court review of Roe v. Wade by just one vote, 47-46. The addition of two pro- life Senators brightens the prospects for reversing that tally in the new Congress. As important as these gains are, the more significant message of the '82 elections may be that a pro-life position can help incumbents remain in office. A number of pro-life members turned back strong challenges largely because of their on-the-record opposition to abortion.
