Alexandria English I ask for God's help and guidance mostly right before I go to sleep. I do it then because I'm mostly all by myself and I have no inter- ruptions. I normally pray before I go to bed because I'm able to pray right on through the night. Melissa Iavina I ask for God's help and guidance everyday and will continue to call upon Him all the time for the rest of my life. I call for His help and guidance everyday because without God by my side I won't be able to live a happy life. HOW MANY 1-~ Ma~ ~dosephwere ~6~fig, by today's standards. Mary was [LViS CAN only fourteen. Joseph was eighteen~ In those days, though, people YOU FIND? U had to grow up faster. They~tarted working (usually with their parents) at a very young ag~. One reason was that people clidn't live very long without the good medicine and food we have now. As young as Ma~:and Joseph were, they had a very deep faith in God. They trusted him completely. Mary didn't think she was good~,'~ enough to be the:Mother of the Savior but she didn't give the angel a hard time. Sh~ could have said, "No way! I can't be pregnant ~! before I get married! What will Joseph think about me?" Mary didn't say any of that. She just agreed to do whatever God wanted and trusted him to take care of )roblems. Joseph also took the angel's word about how Mary became~o pregnant. He didn't feel left out. He felt honored to be so close to the [3 Mother of God and to the Savior o.~ himself. How excited Mary and Joseph must have been as the first Christmas - the birthday of baby Jesus - got closer and closer! As,~th you mark off each day between now and Christmas, spend a few minutes thinking about how Mary ~ I1~1 and Joseph felt while they were l: ruil] waiting. [% Joseph the baby would be the Promised One their people had been waiting for hundreds of years. Who would believe that? Then an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and explained. He said the Holy Spirit had used his power to create a baby inside Mary. Joseph believed. He married Mary as soon as possible. They were very happy. Now Joseph was telling Marywhy he was worried. "The Romans have ordered all of the Israelites to go to our hometowns to be cotmted. They are afraid they are being cheated out of tax money. I tried to convince the tax man you couldn't travel in your condition, Mary. He said Caesar wouldn't allow anyone to stay home." Mary's eyes grew wide with surprise as she looked at Joseph. TheY were both remembering that Bethlehem the hometown of Joseph'S family, was the place where prophets had said the Promised One would be born. Mary and Joseph hadn't been planning to go there. The angel hadn't told them to. Now they realized that tbe prophecy would come true. They had no choice. They had to go to Bethlehem. The trip took five long days. Mary rode on a donkey while Joseph walked beside her. Her back hurt, but sbe didn't complain. Wben they slept on the hard, cold ground each night, she rubbed her stomach and gazed up at the stars. That's where you're coming from, my child, somewhere among the stars. You'll be here soon. 171 be able to hold you in my arms/ When they finally got to Bethlehem. the only place where Mary could Imve her baby without a crowd around her was a cave. It was used as a stable, a place where horses and cows slept. Josepb begged the owner for a better place - somewhere warmer. Mary told him, "It's okay,Joseph. I'll be fine. Take me there now, please. The babywill be here soon."Soon.., what a wonderful word~I'm a little scared. Idon'tknow much about babies But we've waited so long. Soon we will see you at last, Son/ This is a very diffi- cult question, but I think that you should always ask God's help and guid- ance because God can always help you and you can always ask. Why not? Kyle Neumeier The responses are from sixth graders at Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Little Rock. me page nn yun,
