PAGE 12 ARKANSAS CATHOLIC DECEMBER 15, 1991 South Africa Bishops consider AIDS testing for seminarians Cape Town, South Africa (CNS)-- The bishops of South Africa are considering a recommendation that would require AIDS testing for prospective seminarians. The South African bishops' conference Commission for Seminaries said tests for the human immtmodeficiency virus (HIV). which causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. should be "an essential part of the medical test for all seminarians." The commission asked the conference to give the matter urgent attention. Bishop Michael Coleman of Port Eliza- beth, South Africa, head of the Commis- sion for Seminaries, said the proposed tests should not be seen as a puni e measure." Candidates for the priesthood who have terminal diseases such as cancer are not admitted to seminaries in South Africa, and the proposed tests "should be seen in the light" of that policy, Bishop Coleman said.
