T'vo California D oceses Given New Bishops Washington (NC)-- Pope Paul VI has made the following appoint- meets in the hierarchy of the Uni- ted States: Most Rev. Merlin J. Guilfoyle to be the bishop of Stockton, Calif. Most Ray. Mark J. Hurley to be the bishop of Santa Rosa, Calif. Both Bishop Guifoyle and Bishop Hurley have been serving as aux- iliaries to Archbishop Joseph Mc- Gucken of San Francisco. The appointments were an- nounced here by Archbishop Luigi Re=mend=, Apostolic Delegate in the United States. Bishop Guilfoyle was born in San Francisco, July 15, 1908, and was ordained in St. Mary's cath- edral in that city, June 10, 1933. He made post-ordination studies at the Catholic University of Am- erica here, taking a doctorate in canon law. He held several pas- toral and teaching posts. He was named auxiliary to the archbishop of San Francisco in 1950. Bishop Hurley was born in San Francisco, Dec. 13, 1919, and was ordained in St. Mary's cath- edral, Sept. 23, 1944. He made post-ordination studies at the University of California, Berke- ley; the Catholic University of America here, and the Lateran University in Rome. He holds a doctorate in education from the Catholic University of America. A noted educator, he was appoin- ted auxiliary bishop of San Free- Guerrilla Ex-Priest Killed in Uruguay Montevideo, Uruguay (NC)-- A priest Who had renounced his min- istry three months ago to join a guerrilla band died here from wounds received while resisting arrest. Indalecio Olivera Ramos, 34, had notified ecclesiastical auth- orities in August that he was leav- ing his parish dutieshere, accord- ing to Auxiliary Bishop Andrea Ruble Garcia, S.D.B., of Monte- video. The shooting occurred while a few members of the Tupamaros -- a guerrilla band -- attempted to buy mimeographing materials at a downtown shop. One of the salesmen, Antonio Viera Piazza, 26, was a secret government agent. When he recognized the group and attempted to arrest them, the shooting ensued. Vierawas fatally shot but had time to hit el=yarn. The former priest died the next day. I cisco in 1967.
