Q. -- Are there degrees of hap- piness in Heaven according to one' s merit gained in this life? Do the Blessed in Heaven share happi- ness in the Beatific Vision in an equal or unequal manner? A. -- Heaven will not be the same for all. As in the firma- ment, star differs from star in glory, so it is in the abode of the Blessed. The source and the principle of heavenly bliss is the same for all, namely, the sight of God face to face, the Beatific Vision, but their glory and degree of happiness will differ, and the difference in unequal measure will be according to their merits. St. Thomas Aquinas gives us the standard on which God will grant reward; it is that virtue which Christ insists upon as the pre- eminent Christian characteristic, charity. "He shares more fully in the light of glory who possesses the greater love. For where love is greater, there is greater de- sire, and desire in some way renders him who desires, apt and ready to receive the object de- sired. Hence, he who has more love will see God more perfectly and be more blessed." This inequality in heavenly glory has been solemnly declared by the Council of Trent against the RO- formers. They said that the root of justification is in the merits of Christ; since the merits of Christ are equal for all, there cannot be varying degrees in Heav- en. The Church teaches, on the other hand, that the merits of Christ are the means of our at- taining eternal reward, but the reward in each case is measured by the degree of love and service to GOd in this life. *** Q. -- Do manypriests still lead monastic lives? A. -- So far as spiritual dis- cipline is concerned, most com- munities of men follow a rule of life which is basically that of monastic rule; but Comparatively few are now, cloistered in the old monastic tradition. Monks and friars, today, generally spend as much time in the world in active pursuits as they do in their mon- asteries or friaries. Some, today, are teachers in universities and schools; others are actively en- gaged in retreat work or in con- ducting missions; still others are militant missionaries in the out- posts of the world where Christ is scarcely known. Some, however, still prefer to serve Christ in prayer, silence and meditation. Amongst such groups are principally the Car- thusians and Trappists. *** Q. -- There is a statue called the Black Madonna in a church in France; is that the same as our Madonna, only painted black? Why do they call it that? A. -- There are several such statues of the Blessed Virgin throughout the world referred to as Black Madonna. They are so called simply because of their color. "How would you like it if your daughter's door were always open to her lover with whom she wants to be completely free, unbound by the dried ink of a marriage con- tract?" That was the question posed by The Rev. Jerome LeDoux, col- umnist for "The Clarion Herald" newspaper of the New Orleans archdiocese, in a reference to the opening lines of "Gentle on My Mind." The song, recorded by Glen Campbell, Dean Martin, AndyWil- llama, the Ray Conniff Singers and many other soloists and groups, starts out: "It's knowing that your door is always open and your path is free to walk,/That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag rolled up and stashed behind your couch, /And it's knowing I'm not shack- led by forgotten words and bonds and the ink stains that have dried upon some line,/That keeps you in the backroads by the rives of my memory/That keeps you ever gentle on my mind." Father LeDoux cited "Gentle on My Mind" in a discussion of what he called pornophony -- "that should be the lyrical counterpart of pornography." i originally made from a dark or black material; others have dar- kened with age, orhavebeenblack- ened by the smoke of myriads of votive tapers burned at their feet. The Madonna of which you speak is probably Notre Dame du Pilier in Chartres. Another very famous Black Ma- donna is that of Jasna Gora in Poland. The 600 year old statue bears the scars of having been attacked by blows from weapons on two occasions. The defenders of Our Lady of Czestochowa are alert to the present danger of irreverence to her in her com- munist-dominated land. His prime targetwas those radio stations that "expose ouryoungs- ters to a steady diet of immoral ideas, no matter how subtly pre- sented," in various 'qop 100" songs. But then he added: "The so-called respectable ra- dio stations should also examine their principles of music spin- ning. Take 'Gentle on My Mind,' for instance, h catchy, simple melody combines with nice-sound- ing, immoral lyrics to make a song which no one really pays at- tention to, and which is therefore passed off as something decent." Father LeDoux said lyrics pose a real threat to the moral lives of young people, and "adults who shrug this off as being extreme or ultra-conservative are indicting their own lack of morals."
