Matthiesen, Josephinum in Worthington, Ohio, and was Bishop of the Diocese of Amarillo, Texas, and a leading spokesman for the Catholic anti- nuclear movement, will present a lecture, "The Morality of Nuclear Armament," at Subiaco Academy Monday, Dec. 6, at 8 P.M. The lecture is free and open to the public. Advance tickets, necessary for admission, can be obtained by calling or writing to the Office of the Principal, Subiaco Academy, Subiaco, Arkansas 72865, phone-- 934-4292. Bishop Matthiesen gained national attent- ion in January, 1981, when he wrote in his diocesan paper his opposition to the proposed MX Missile System and to the Pantex atomic warhead assembly plant, located in the Amarillo diocese. Much controversy has developed from his firm stand, but he con- tinues to preach the message that mankind must take a new course. "Peace cannot be kept by force, but only by understanding" is his motto. Bishop Matthiesen was born in Olfen, Texas, June 11, 1921. He received his seminary training at the Pontifical College ordained to the priesthood on March 10, 1946. In 1948, he was named editor of the diocesan paper, now known as The West Texas Catholic. He continues to write for this paper in a column entitled "Wise and Otherwise." In 1980, he was appointed Bishop of Amarillo and was ordained to the episcopate May 30, 1980. The Matthiesen lecture is part of Subiaco Academy's program to bring lecturers on current topics of interest to Subiaco and to the Western Arkansas area. THE BROTHERS OF THE POOR OF ST.
