But it was his remark about religious women working on diocesan marriage tri- bunals that created the biggest stir. "Women religious can be very helpful in dealing with marriage cases, but we have to be careful that their tender hearts do not play tricks on them," he said. His remarks were widely criticized as being sexist and ignorant of the profes- sionalism of women who work on tribu- nals. Lopez Trujillo has survived several as- sassination attempts during his 11 years as archbishop of Medellin, Colombia's drug capital. The cardinal and other Colombian bishops have also been dogged by rumors and published accusation that they ac- cepted drug money. Lopez Trujillo denied the allegations during a May interview with Catholic News Service. The cardinal has served as president of the Colombian bishops' conference and of the Latin American Bishops' Council, known by its Spanish initials, CELAM. As head of the national episcopal con- ference, the cardinal repeatedly con- demned terrorist tactics and violence used by drug traffickers and the guerrillas. In 1984 the cardinal set off a national political controversy when he condemned a Colombian government population con- trol program that was funding sterilizations. In 1980 the program supplied intra- uterine devices and oral contraceptives to 78,000 women and paid for the steriliza- tion of 41,000 Colombians, mostly women. After the cardinal's remarks, the country's top health official promised to investigate the claim and announced that health workers involved in family planning would be trained in natural birth ontrol methods approved by the Church.
