Many Hispanic Catholics have made St. Barbara Parish in De Queen their home parish. Not unlike any others in the diocese, this community thrives on celebra- tions, festivals and their heritage. Would respect their culture, language, and their particular Way of being Catholic. FOrtunately, the Holy Spirit WOuld provide the necessary iracle to get everyone started it happened through the i tercession of Mary. In 1990 I was assigned as director of Hispanic ministry for the diocese. Shortly after this, a diocesan Hispanic COUncil was formed. his council was ade up of lay I'Iispanic leaders from across the state. The PreSident of this COUncil was a man IVho moved to rkansas about 10 Years ago and worked ith his pastor to Start a ministry to eWly arriving His- Pallics. That man was l{berto Martinez. Finally, the road fr0 the south and the road from the east in Arkansas. One of the jobs of the October 24, 1998 council was to plan a gathering for the Hispanic Catholics in the dio- cese. This event became known as the "diocesan Encuentro:' It was in 1991, at the second Encuentro, a change occurred that was to ensure the direction for the development of Hispanic ministry. At this Encuentro a statue of Our Lady of San Juan de Los Logos was brought up from Mexico. This statue is from the basilica in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, that bears the same name as the statue. There have been many miracles recorded over the 400-year his- Father Scott Friend makes his rounds during a recent festival held by the Hispanic members of St. Barbara Parish in De Queen. 87
