About six months before, Father Friend had hired Sheila Gomez, who had studied immi- gration law, to help him. Father Friend had recognized the need of many Hispanics for help with their immigration status, and he was already envisioning a dioce- san service for that purpose. When I became director, Sheila became the assistant director of Hispanic ministry and continued as such for a year. During that time, the demand for help with Coro Hispano de Arkansas is the statewide diocesan choir represent- ing 22 Hispanic communities. The group performs annually at Encuentro and other special events. immigration problems gradually took more and more of her time, and in the summer of 1994 she founded Catholic immigrati011 Services, which she still direCts.
