On All Saints Day, Nov. 1, 1996, he marked the 150th atmiversary of the erection of the first Catho C cathedral in Little Rock, and the 296th anniversary of the first Catholic Mass said in what wo ld become Arkansas. Bishop McDonald has riot sought to neglect the spiritual co " ceres of his people. He traveled with the youth of his diocese to the World Youth Day in Denver to see the Holy Father in 1993. He has led pilgrimages to European Catholic shrines in paris, Lourdes and Rome. He has made several visits to Rome to meet wit the Holy Father. His concem for staying in u ity with the mind and heart of the Roman pontiff can be reflected his strong support of the pope's new universal "Catechism of Catholic Church," which was ptllr lished in 1994.
