PAGE 12 THE GUARDIAN, SEPTEMBER 12, 1969 / \\; Designs New Tabernacle Father Thomas Murphy, pastor of Annunciation Church, West Mifflin, Pa., believes he has solved a problem perplexing priests and people since the introduction of Mass facing the people. He has designed a tabernacle that keeps the Blessed Sacrament on the altar, yet leaves an open expanse in the middle of the altar so that the congregation can follow the Mass easily. "With the empty encircled space concentrating attention on the chalice, paten, and hands of the celebrant," says Fr. Murphy, "the best of the old and the new in devotional attitudes are preserved." New Delhi, India (NC) -- All drive for independence, but have merit -- made Assam free of foreign missionaries will be ordered to leave the border areas of Assam state. The announcement in I_ok Sabha, parliament's lower house, by Minister of State for Home Af- fairs V. C. Shukla came 'after more than two years of dilly-dal- lying during which several mis- sionaries received notices to leave the country that were la- ter either suspended or dropped. The Mizo tribesmen in Assam state have been agitating for in- dependence for some time, and have allegedly received aid from Red China. Foreign missionaries in Assam have also been accused of supporting the Mizos in their consistently denied the charges. The government's decision means that about half of Assam will be without foreign mission- aries and that the dioceses of Tezpur and Dibrugarh in that state will lose many keypersonnel. The two diocese together have about 250 priests, Brothers and Sisters, of whom 42 are for- eigners. In parliament, Shukla also re- iterated the government's policy of the "progressive Indianiza- tion" of all Christian missions in India.
