Pinata 4-7611 --'- V Arkansas native portrait ,of Nelson Mandela By Arnold Smith Arkansas State Press Many historical events have taken place capturing the essence of change in the 1990s. Many countries have had their people awakened by the desire to attain freedom and democracy. With that thought in mind, Johnnie B. Bates, Jr., an Arkansas native, was commissioned to create a painting of African National Congress leader Nelson Mandela's visit to the U. S. Bates, born in Dumas (Desha County), left Arkansas when he was four years old. However, Bates said, "Arkansas is still my home, it's where my roots are." After moving to San Diego, Bates said he would come back to Arkansas to visit in the summers. "And I loved it." he said. Now a resident of Georgia, Bates was commissioned to create the painting in commemoration with Mandela's visit to theU. S. The painting represents three settings of Mandela's life. Poised centrally on the painting is Mandelajust after his release from prison. To the left is Mandela again poised widl his clenched fist symbolizing black power. And directly below the center is Mandela and his young wife Winnie embracing. This painting also depicts vignettes of internationally-known figures such as U.S. Pres. George Bush, South Africa Pres. F.W de Klerk and Americans who contributed to the historic Feb. 11, 1990 release of Mandela. Traditionallyattired people are found at the bottom ofthe picture separated by the continent of Africa descending across a bust of the U. S. Bates told the State Press that he has received a lot ofgood responses from the painting and people are eager to pur- chase it. Bates has received numerous awards for his talents and his community in- volvements. In 1987, his creative work "Spirit of Martin" Bates was chosen by Coca-Cola USAas the theme for its 1988 "Share the Dream" campaign. a great office lunch... order our deli trays or boxed lunches, call for info.
