ARKANSAS CATHOLIC August22, 1998 Page 3 SCHOOL SUPPORT: Knights of Columbus member Harry Fratesi pre- sented principal Peter Rivera of St. Jo- seph Junior High Sch6ol in Pine Bluff and pastor Father An dy Smith with a Check for money raised to support the school. The Knights sponsor fish fries each Friday to support the parish school. SUMMER LEARNING: Students from Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock participated in the Mercy Summer Corps, an extension of the school s Ser- vice Learning Program for Juniors. The program is open to all students who have completed their junior year in high school. This summer, sponsor Ann Morris took Laura Morris and Kristin DuPriest to Cincinnati for one week to work in the Peesley Neighborhood Center, a "drop-in shelter" for men and women in a low-income housing project. They lived at the Belmont Residence of the Sisters of Mercy, Sponsors Amy Ballard and Alexie Gomez took nine students to Las Milpas, Texas, for a week. The students ran a day camp for underprivileged children at the Sisters of Mercy Project ARISE. The students were Jacquelyn Brubaker, Erin Crow, Meghan Crow, Katherine Harding, Melanie Hubble, Leandra Jailall, Elizabeth Kaminski, Jennifer Stewart and Tabitha Stewart. * MASS TIME CHANGE" Effective Sept. 2, Wednesday night Mass at St. Theresa Church in Little Rock has been changed to 6 p.m. A holy hour will be- gin at 6:30 p.m. MEETING: The Third Order of Carmelites will meet at St. Mary Church in Hot Springs after the 8 a.m. Mass Saturday, Sept. 5. For more information, call (501) 760-2340. Grape Festival turns 100 St. Joseph Parish in Tontitown hosted the 100th annual Grape Fes- tival, which has turned into a itywide event. The weeklong fes- tivities to give thanks for the grape harvest began with the dedication of a bronze statue called Italian Im- migrant. Bishop Andrew J. McDonald celebrated Mass and dedicated the statue Aug. 8. The statue represents the first settlers to the town. For five days, ending on the feast of the Assumption, parish- loners served up plates of spaghetti and fried chicken. The festival also included carnival rides, a farmer's market, book and craft sale and crowning of a queen. QUILT SALE: Quilters at St. Peter the Fisherman Church in Mountain Home will hold their annual quilt and craft sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Satur- day, Sept. 5 in the parish hall. Refresh- ments will be served. BLOOD DRIVE: A blood drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 23 in the Family Life Center at Christ the King Church in Little Rock. The drive is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and American Red Cross. Fun and games Austin Reed enjoys the activities at one of the booths at the St. Joseph School Bazaar in Conway Aug. 6-8. Events included an old-fashioned dinner, face painting, midway, country store and giant flea mar- ket. All profits support the parish's elementary and high school. What's happening in your parish?
