PAGE 10 ARKANSAS CATHOLIC JULY 28, 1991 central ization By Jennifer Roedersheimer Cincinnati (CNS) - Family life is so inter- twined with the life of the Church that evan- gelizers are "missing the boat" if they don't evangelize people in terms of their family relationships, Catholics in evangelization ministry were told at a national conference. Mitch Finley, a family minister from Spo- kane, WA, made the comments at the eighth annual conference of the National Coundl for Catholic Evangelization held in Cincinnati. "Family Is Church: Faith and Mission" was the theme of the conference. "If you think your family is (bad), read a few of the stories in the Old Testament." Finley and his wife, Kathy, a husband-wife family ministry team, discussed how family and other close relationships in an individual's life interact with the life of the Church. Finley said family life - with all its ups and downs - has been central, not peripheral, to the life of "Go back to the Old Testament. These Hebrew Scriptures are filled with stories of families - wild and crazy families. We're not talking Ozzie and Harriet here," he said. "If you think your family is (bad), read a few of the stories in the Old Testament." Finley discounted the notion that family life is a "second-class'-aay to live one's faith, as compared to a vowed, religious life. "I'he New Testament says that when two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of it," he said. "If that isn't a description of a family, I don't know what is." Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk of Cincin- nail, in a keynote address at the conference, said that the good news of Christ "is not some arcane secret that we have been given to be kept hidden from others." He told conference participants that what- ever Catholics do as Church should have an "evangelizing dimension," pointing out that Church has existed from the beginning in order to evangelize. When reaching out to believers, evangeli- zation can be as simple as encouragement in faith, said Pilarczyk, president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Those who have fallen away must be evan- gelized in another way, he said. "Here it is not so much a question of our imparting infor- marion.., as it is of our being willing to show that faith means to a believer," he said. Finley suggested that Catholics seeking to become effective evangelizers look to the ad- vertising industry, noting that many ads play on the need for intimacy. People today are hungry for warm, human intimacy which can be found through family and friends, he said.
