News editor wins rievance Detroit (CNS) - The American Arbitra- tion Association has awarded back pay and a clear employment record to the news editor of The Michigan Catholic, who was suspended for reporting thenames of par- ishes to be closed in a story that was never published. Catherine Haven, who wrote a story last January reporting parish closings that Car- dinal Edmund C. Szoka, then Archbishop of Detroit and publisher of the archdioce- san newspaper, wanted announced at week- end Masses, won a grievance she had pre- sented to the Detroit Newspaper Guild. Haven is an award-winning writer who has been with the paper for 17 years and news editor since 1984. "I'he employer did not have just or suffi- cient cause to issue a three-day suspension against" Haven, according to the decision, "and the penalty was arbitrary and unrea- sonable." Sr. M.
