That's the depth of the priest short- seen by Richard Schoenherr of University of Wisconsin at Madison, consid ered to be a top authority on the subject. In the mid-1960s, there were about 750 U.S. Catholics for every priest. Today, the ratio is about 2,000 to 1. By 2005 that ratio will be approximately 3,100 to 1. Schoenherr, a Catholic, said he expected to publish his research results sometime this year in a book tentatively titled The Catholic Priestin the United States: Demographic Investigations. Schoenhcrr has provided a private report on his research without analysis to the U.S. Catholic Conference and to bishops who cooperated in the study.
