Collegiality Stressed at Latin American Session Caracas, Venezuela (NC)-- An official statement issued jointly here by U. S. and Latin American bishops on Church cooperation stressed "the spirit of colleg- iality" as a prelude to deeper commitments. Some 40 participants met for three days here"todiscussprob- terns and challenges facing the Church in the two continents," the statement said. It listed the main areas of discussion as fol- lows: 1. "The pastoral guidelines of the Second General Assembly of the Latin American Bishops (held in Medellin, Colombia, last Sept- ember) as a basis for renewal in Latin America." 2. "Socio-economic problems, which were considered within the framework of the principles as outlined in (the encyclical of Pope Paul VI), The Development of Peoples, and as adapted to the Latin American situation by the Medellin guidelines." 3. "Personnel: first, the role of personnel from the United States in today's Church in Latin America, and second, the training required by that role." "The bishops, after threedays of intensive discussion of these grave problems, took steps to continue the dialogue between the representatives of the two continents," the joint statement said. Paris, Ark., Sergeant In Top Air Force Unit Sherman, Tex. -- Technical Ser- geant John C. Kern, son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Kern of Paris, has been recognized for helping his unit earn the U. S. Air Force Flying Safety Plaque. Sergeant Kern is an aircraft maintenance technician with the 4780th Air Defense Wing (Train- ing) at Perrin AFB, Tex. The unit was cited for 80,000 hours of accident-free flying over a 24-month period. The sergeant, a graduate of New Subiaco Academy, has com- pleted a tour of duty at Phan Rang AB, Vietnam. Trinity Washington (NC)--Sister Mary Patrick Furdon, 72, former pres- ident of Trinity College here, died at Villa Julie College in Steven- son, Md., after a long illness. She was a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur for 46 years. She was director of vocations for the community's Marylandpro- vince prior to her death. She College President Dies served as president of Trinity from 1953 to 1959 and as presi- dent of Villa Jule College in Stev- enson from 1959 to 1964. She had held the post of director of vo- cations since 1964. Before serv- ing as Trinity president, Sister Mary Patrick was the provincial superior of the Maryland Province of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
