Several priests and lay leaders have been arrested and a number of foreign missionaries were ex- pelled from the country on char- ges of subversion. In March Archbishop Camara compared the government to nazism and fascism because of the suspension of civil rights it decreed in December. In late March, amid the grow- ing tension between progressive Catholics and the government, sol- diers armed with machine guns entered the building of the Bra- zilian Bishops' Conference at Rio de Janeiro and arrested lay lead- er Tiber Sulik, who in addition to being international president of the Catholic Workers' Action (ACe) is also director of the Brazilian bishops' commission for justice and peace and an advisor of Bra- zilian Caritas, Catholic chari- ties organization. Late in May the archdiocese of Fortaleza ordered its churches closed for two days to protest the one-year prison sentence given a priest by a military court. The priest, Father Geraldo Bonfim, was jailed because one of his ser- mons was said to have defamed the armed forces. Earlier, the Fortaleza archdio- cese, in an official note, had cri- ticized the city council of Cra- teus -- a suffragan See -- for declaring Bishop Antonio Batista Fragoso as persona non grata -- a person unacceptable to the city government. The city council's action fol- lowed the dismissal by Bishop Fragoso of Msgr. Jose MariaBon- fire as vicar general because he refused to accept the decisions of the diocesan priests' council. The city council's action was Reading The Guardian KEEPS A CATHOLIC I NFORMED .,d initiated by Nonato Bonfim, a relative of the former vicar general. He was supported by big landowners who consider Bis- hop Fragoso a communist. Bishop Fragoso is widely known in this country for his liberal views and has called for agrarian land reforms. He has also claim- ed that Cuba under Fidel Castro has made great strides that are "in line with the Gospel."
