I would like to respond in agreement to your editorial. The typical pregnant (Afro-American) teenager/woman that I see in my neighbor- hood does not look so serene. She looks scared, she looks tired, she looks bewildered. I see it everyday, these women carrying their "future chiefs of tomorrow." I look forward to one day a child being born that will bring world peace and be that leader to solve world hunger. But, until then, the reality sets in. Not two blocks from me, "T" is 14 years old. She has had two children. She could not take care of the first One, and "good Lord," she has another one. She hasn't done a great job in taking care of this last child - so, I keep it most of the time. What hope does she have? Do you honestly think she looks like the woman in the ad? Yes, I believe you should give life a chance - but, not like I see it in my neighborhood. Not like the people I grew up with. Not like "T". Not like those little girls struggling just to survive on a day-to-day basis. Not like '~", who eats molded cornbread from the kitchen floor because someone told his mother that "God loves you and this baby is a blessing to you." I look at '~J" and wonder what quality of life he is going to have. I look at the ad and say, "Gosh, she looks so happy being pregnant," and, the preg- nant teenager says 'Why am I so unhappy?" When the ad stops running, "T" and her two children will still be in the same pre- dicament, and '~J" will still be eating the government-issued food from the can. And the million dollars??? 'We are trying this month to finish the CASA drive and looking at the Communications drive followed by the Latin America drive. It seems we are finishing up one and starting an- other. My idea is to assign a quota to each parish to a special collection fund, which could be paid quarterly, then dispense the money on a percentage basis, depending on the char- ity and using past records as a basis. As you indicate, the Church is un- questionably more careful today in speaking of indulgences because this area of our faith has been so badly misunderstood in the past. Traditional teaching about indul- gences is founded on two basic Chris- tian truths. First, every sin is not only a disobedience of God's law, it is a viola- tion of the order established by God and a rejection of His love. This means that complete forgiveness requires not only conversion but a re- integration of that divine order and plan. Second, as Pope Paul pointed out in the Apostolic Constitution on Indul- gences in which he called for reform of the whole indulgence structure, the early Church community "was fully convinced that it was pursuing the work of salvation in community." Our doctrine of the Communion of Saints teaches that all children of God in Christ, whether in this "life or in eternity, are linked in the Mystical Body of Christ. Thus, says the Holy Father, the Church "undertook various ways of applying the fruits of our Lord's re- demption to the individual faithful, and of leading them to cooperate in the salvation of their brothers, so the en- tirebody of the Church might be pre- pared" for the fullness of God's king- dom. The remission of temporal punish- ment for sins already forgiven through prayer, fasting and good works has been called indulgence for hundreds of years, though the principles of faith go back to the beginning of Christianity. A few things are worth keeping in mind. 1. The number of formally - indul- genced prayers and works in the Enchir- idion is reduced drastically, placing much more emphasis on living faith- fully our daily lives as Christians. The main concern, it says, "has been to attach greater importance to a Chris- tian way of life and lead souls to culti- vate a spirit of prayer and penance and to practice the virtues of faith, hope and charity, rather than merely repeat- hag certain formulas and acts." 2. Partial indulgences are granted using only those words, with no deter- mination of days or years as was corn- things to avoid confusion. Contrary to what many Catholics believe, an indul- gence of one year, for example, did not mean one year "off of Purgatory." 3. Plenary (full) indulgences can be gained only once a day with proper conditions fulfilled. 4. The Church takes great pains today to keep the understanding of indul- gences in harmony with the Gospel and wifll the teachings of Vatican Council II. In this, as in all the Spiritual life of the Church, "it is hoped that the faith- ful will be more effectively moved to live holier and more useful lives, thus healing the split between the faith they profess and their daily lives.., by gather- ing their humane, domestic, profes- sional, social and technical enterprises into one vital synthesis with religious values" (Enchiridion, No. 4).
