During my years in the seminary, I developed a warm and lasting friendship with Monsignor John U. Lyness who is presently the Pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church in Towson, Maryland. He came to Little Rock on Sunday evening and we enjoyed supper at the McNeil home. On Monday, all associated with me in the chancery sponsored a lun- cheon in his honor. Then I drove him to Conway for a brief visit with Paul and Lou Hiegel. In the evening, Irene and Phil Dumboski prepared I m+ DI a marvelous spaghetti supper for him and my guests. Both Monsignor and I were truly refreshed by the visit. Tuesday was a beautiful and memorable day in the life of our diocese. Accompanied by Father Francis Malone, Father Thomas, Monsignor F. X. Murphy, I went t6 Hot Springs Village for the dedication of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. For some two years, Father Kepple, Father Doyle as Pastor of St. Mary's and the lay leaders of the Village have worked together to achieve this goal. The church was completely filled. The music and the people lifted us up to the heavens. A building made of bricks and stone now becomes the dwelling place of the Lord upon earth. After the dedication, we enjoyed a wonderful banquet with the entire parish family. I can only encourage the people of the Village to continue their support of the Church so that they can finish the parish hall and complete the parking area paving. WEDNESDAY TOO was significant and memorable. I went to St. Vincenrs In- firmary Chapel to participate in the Mass sponsored by the Serra Club for priests who are ordained one year, five years, -',llr'11r'"''"'"J"ll ten years, etc. Monsignor ..... In the evening I went to the Little Rock Convention Center to participate in the brotherhood citation dinner, Arkansas Council on Brotherhood of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. The honoree this year is Dr. Elijah E. Palnick, Rabbi in this community for many years. We join his family and friends in extending our best wishes and congratulations. In 1966, the award was given to Bishop Fletcher of happy memory and in 1975, the award was given to Monsignor James E. O'Connell. ON FRII)AY. In the late afternoon, relatives, friends and many priests from all parts of the diocese assembled with us at St. John's Seminary Chapel to celebrate the Golden An- niversary of Priesthood for Father Alcuin Kubis, O.S.B., Pastor of St. Edward's since 1968. To hold this Mass and banquet gave us an op- portunity to express our gratitude for the love and support that comes our way from Subiaco Abbey. We welcomed the chance to thank Father Alcuin personally for the love and devotion of fifty years of priesthood. Father Louis Janesko, a long time friend, gave an inspiring and uplifting homily. Both Abbot Raphael and I had an op- portunity to express our thanks to God and to Father Alcuin. On Saturday, at 9:00 in the morning, I went to Abba House on Oak Street in Little Rock. I could hardly believe the transformation that has taken place in that old building. Jim and Pat Grabber were there along with their friends who love their work and support them in their efforts to prepare a place for women who are pregnant and who are troubled. I felt that we were making history as we brought the Lord of Hosts to Abha House sacramentally for the first time. In the middle of the day, I visited Monsignor Bann who is seriously ill in St. Vincenrs Infirmary. In the evening, I offered Mass in the home of Robert and Bernice Selig. Their daughter, Carla, has just returned from a semester in Rome, Italy as a student at the University of Dallas. On that occasion, I wore a beautiful alb which Carla had purchased in Rome for Father James Patrick McDonnell. It was a joyful yet tearful reunion at the altar of the Lord. I enjoyed supper with the family and dessert with many friends who came to visit Carla. THE SUN was already cascading upon the earth when I arose at six on Sunday morning. Mr. Norman Sch- muck picked me up and we ,-,, +''"', HELP PREVENT b FOREST FIRES IN THE SOUTH drove 113 miles west to the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption at Booneville for Confirmation. Father Leo Koesler presented the class for the Sacrament. Father David and Father Andrew came from Subiaco for the occasion. The children were prepared and the congregation was filled with joy as we offered the can- didates the gift of the Holy Spirit. After Mass, the children and I enjoyed visiting with a horse which one parishioner had brought to the church. We then had a potluck luncheon. After lunch, Mr. Schmuck and I traveled to Little Italy to participate in the Spring Spaghetti Dinner. We met people from all over the state even as far away as Mountain Home. The dinner deserves its reputation. The company is delightful and the meal very tasty. On hand to greet Sewing-Vacuum-Fan Ctr. From Little Italy, we traveled to Sacred Heart Church in Morrilton. I rested for a while. I enjoyed supper with Father Burns, Father Favre, Father Behr, Father Bernacki. At 7:30 in the evening, we assembled in the school gymnasium to preside at Sacred Heart High School Graduation. I was delighted to see Cathy Zimmerman among the graduates. Nine years ago, I visited Cathy when she was in the lower grades of Sacred Heart School and was seriously ill in a Little Rock hospital. In the late evening, since Mr. Schmuck had departed for Little Rock earlier, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Hiegel drove me back to my home. Worldwide Opticol Your friend, Andrew J.
