Rather, I think of what Jesus has done for me. I think of what people have done for me. In my earliest youth, perhaps even in my mother's womb, He called me. "Come, follow me, and I will make you a fisher of men!" It was Jesus who gave me my family, my mother, Theresa, and my father, James. It was Jesus who gave me my 11 broth- ers and sisters. It was Jesus who led me to His altar for the celebration of the Mass, the Holy Eucharist. It was Jesus who empowered me to forgive sins. It was Jesus who visited the sick, Consoled the bereaved, loved the poor, the lost, the down and out. He used me to extend His ministry out into this poor broken world. It was Jesus who gave me His mother Mary to be my mother. From the cross, He said, "Woman, be- hold thy son; son behold thy mother." With me, Jesus shared the maternal love of His Mother, Mary. Jesus has been the giver for 50 years. When I think of being a priest for 50 years, I think of priests, deacons, religious, you have been the giv- ers -- you have walked with me for 50 years -- you have given me the encouragement, the good example, the love that I need to be another Christ. When I think of being a priest for 50 years, I think not of myself, but I think rather of the faith, the hope, the love of people both in good times and in bad. You, my people, truly have given me good example. You that once was mine. McDonald washes the feet of parishionerS at Bishop the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock on Ho!!Y Thursday in 1995.
