PAGE 10 THE GUARDIAN, MAY 2, 1969 After the Episcopal Ordination Auxiliary Bishop Graves moves in procession from the Cathedral. Preceding him are Bishop Lawrence M. DeFalco of Amarillo and Auxiliary Bishop Warren L. Boudreaux of Lafayette, La., the Bishop consecrators. Following him is Bishop Fletcher, the principal consecrator. Presenting Diocesan Spiritual Bouquet One of the highlights of a banquet for visiting Bishops and clergy last Friday night was presentation of a Spiritual Bouquet and a purse from the priests, Religious and laity of the Diocese. Making the presentation at the rostrum is Msgr. Francis A. Allen, V.F., pastor of Holy Souls parish, Little Rock. There Were Humorous Sidelights There were a few humorous sidelights to last Friday's episco- pal ordination of Auxiliary Bis- hop Lawrence P. Graves of Little Rock. Archbishop Philip M. Hannah of New Orleans voiced the first during the sermon at the ordina- tion Mass with a remark about the unsolicited advice that members of the hierarchy receive from members of their own families. At another point, in a tribute to Bishop Graves, he recalled that "he attended the North American College (in Rome) in my time, and asserted: "I think he was there during what might be called the real vintage years -- though I admit this is very debatable." Toward the end of the homily, he praised Bishop Fletcher, and said: "... if these times were not so touchy about the age of Bishops, I would even call him a grand patriarchal figure for the whole state." Then, as the ordination Mass concluded, Bishop Graves himself worked a smile into his brief re- marks. He observed that at the point in the Mass where the faith- ful pray for their bishop, the bis- hop offering the Mass refers to himself as "Your unworthy ser- vant." The new Auxiliary re- called that a week earlier he had concelebrated a Mass with a group .of Bishops and afterwards had informed them he wished to dis- sociate himself from the "un- worthy servants" because at that time he had not yet been conse- crated a bishop. That night, Msgr. James E. O'Connell, who was toastmaster of a dinner for visiting Bishops and priests at the Hotel Marion, amused the crowded dining room with remarks about "the pass- over," obliquely referring to Arkansas priests who might have inwardly anticipated being appoint- ed Auxiliary to Bishop Fletcher, and with "an apology to the Guard- inn Press" for using the word "camaraderie" to describe the re- lationship of Arkansas priests and seminarians with their Bishop. (Only the anti-communists in file audience did not laugh at this one... Ed.) Toward the end of the after- dinner speeches, as Bishop Graves thanked the assemblage, he re- ferred to simplifications result- ing from updating bf the church. Formerly, he observed, there was a prayer in the Mass called the "Libera." Now, however, it is called "an embolism, so the laity will understand. the Conclusion Of the Episcopal O,-(lination I FOREST HEIGHTS SHOPPING CE 00ITER . . in the Heart of Holy Souls Parish.
