NO BUSINESS WITH HITLER We are accustomed to look upon Foreign Embassies as extra-territorial. They carry a certain exemption from the laws, customs and concern for the welfare, of the country in which they stand. But when American business firms, merely because of their bigness, begin to presume similar exemptions, it is tim6 for the American people to wake up t O a condition which needs quick and sharp correction. Big Business has grown big through the profits garnered from the American people, and the opportunities for progress which this country has afforded. It has been able to go be yond the confines of this nation by virtue of the protection which our Government has always extended. When it forgets the flag under which it has prospered and neglects to give the first preference of its patents, secret processes and other benefits to its native land, it puts itself in the position of the man with soul so dead, and earns the opprobrium which the lack of patriotic, loyalty always merits. We do not presume to sit in judgment on the confusing case of the Standard Oil Company's deal with Germany on the synthetic rubber patents. We leave that to Senate Com- mittees and Federal Courts. The Oil Company to date has come out of the case with hands somewhat besmudged. Whether further findings would bring a more clearcut indictment of Standard's patriotism or merely throw a shadow on Govern- ment personnel for lack of official astuteness and awareness, does not matter. The case is sufficiently clear to warrant a stiff lecture to Big Business on the question of patriotism from the man-in-the-street, who is constantly being lectured on the need of sacrifice for his country. Patriotism can not be a one-side proposition. It is an all- out and all-inclusive virtue that must encompass every class and individual. Manufacturers can not be shouting for a longer week and less pay for workers and be chagrined when a ceiling is put on profits. Workers can not expect the Government to freeze living costs at a fair standard and at the same time re- sent a check being put on wage increases. There is need for everybody to put country first in these times. And the part of Big Business is to forget the business- as-usual and make their contribution to their country's welfare, big. Or they may not be any business at all. For "you can't do business with Hitler."The Evangelist. A CROSS FOR THE ANDES Soon a large cross will be erected on Mt. Aeoncague in Argentina. This emblem of Christianity, weighting 161 pounds, will rest on the highest point in the Western Hemisphere. The giant cross will be a welcome companion to the massive statue of Christ of the Andes that now towers above the Andes region. This distinctly Christian gesture is most appropriate. For Christ and Hh Cross are inseparable. The Christ of glory, Whose image rises about the mountain district of South Amer- ica, is the Christ Whose path to triumph was marked out by His Precious Blood sheddings. And Christ the King was }irst enthroned on the Cress of shame. We, who profess to be followers of Christ, must not be ashamed of His Cross. For by His death Christ transformed the cross from an object of derision to an object of veneration. With St. Paul we may rightly exclaim, "God forbid that I glory in anything save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Ghristl" ' These words of the great Apostle of the Gentiles suggests the timely thought that we are living in time in which all of us must take up the cross of sacrifice. The chief reward of Heaven is the presence of God and' God's presence will not tolerate sin. Sin is the willful breaking of God's laws. He who dies unrepentent of his grievious sins, goes to hell. He who dies with contrite heart goes eventually to Heaven. But he who sins, though for- given, must make reparation in suffering and cleansirtg for the temporal punishment due to sin, before his soul is fit to enter the sanctity and purity of Heaven. As Our Divine Lord, Himself, said: "I say to thee, thou shalt not go out from thence till thou repay the last farthing." (Matt. 5:26). Purgatory then is the place of purging, of atonement, of paying the last farthing How serve the punishment, how long the time, have ,not been revealed by God; but we do know that final sales- straight to Heaven, or enduring a shorter stay in Purgatory. Suffering! Not a one of us can escape it. The saints prayed for more of it. Why should not all of us make use of it in this testing ground called life? "If anyone will come after Me," said Our Saviour, "let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me." (Matt. 16:24). What a consolation then at the death of, say, a dear old mother one who has sacrificed and suf- fered so long and so hard for God and neighborto feel that long years ago, perhaps, she took up her cross and followed Him from Jeru- salem to Calvary, and mayhap then direct into His arms in Heaven. Consolation! Yes, but more than that--an explanationperhaps the only explanation for the other- wise inexplicable inequalities of this world. Words of ] Encouragement m Nervous Depression. To use an expression common among boys nowadays, and, un- fortunately, among the other sex, we feel rotten. Not to lose patience with our- selves when we feel rotten is a very high virtue. The worst form of nerves is depression People really believe they have lost faith, hope, love, everything. It is a very great trial St. Teresa says: "The worst of sickness is that it so often weakens you, you cannot fix your thoughts on God." But this is of no consequence. It is the doing for God that is important, not the thinking of God. Conquer Weakness. It is a very great trial to many of us to be unable to get every day to Holy Communion. But to bear quietly with our weakness, because it is His will, pleases Him a great deal more than the most fervent Communion we ever _ade. Headaches are a great trial. We cannot pray with a "headache." But if we bear with ourselves it is more meritorious than the best of prayers. Bear With Others. Bear with others, we most of us have a great deal to bear from others It is often the reflex of what THEY have to bear from us, but still, none the less, very hard. The people we live with are not omniscient. They may be ex- cellent, and have the best inten- tions, but they make mistakes; they may form hard judgments. Let us ask God to give us patience to bear with ourselves and to bear with others. The special sacramental grace of Holy Communion is charity charity toward God and charity towards our neighbor Let us re- ceive Holy Communion with the thought more consciously upper- most in mind: "By this Holy Com- munion I humbly pray that Jesus will give me the grace to love God more ardently and to love my fellow men more sincerely." Like to the ticking of a clock, acts of love for God are multi- plied in the life of the frequent, and daily, Communicant. The con- stant thought of yearning love for union with Jesus Christ keeps alive the spirit of Divine Charity so that the frequent Communicant is lead- ing a life filled with the thought of God and of His love. Today's Parable Father Stedman, Confraternity of the Preeiou Blood, Brooklyn, N. Y. JUST AVERAGE PEOPLE Most of Christ's friends when He was on this earth were "JUST AVERAGE PEOPLE." P e o p 1 e average in mind, average in their pursuits, average in abilities and shortcomings. Christ trusted these average people with His teach- ings. (He did not even write down His teachings) His faith, His con- idence was not in the "great mind's." To ensure their perpetua- tion, He entrusted His Teachings to the hearts, common sense and faith of "Average people." As it was little snow-flakes that broke Napoleon .on the Moscow road, so the real work of building Chris- tianity in the centuries following Christ was done by countless humble men and women, who spread the message by their word and by their example among their neighbors. Not great talents, not cleverness, not great learning but THE CAPACITY TO LOVE which we find so abundantly among the common people This capacity to love is the human power that best serves God. Only by love can God be made real to >thers. Only by love does God become a very real force in ourselves. Love translates the Gos- pel-love translates our lives into Christ's. Love is understood by all. Let us never bemoan our AVER- AGENESS but only if we are BE- LOW AVERAGE in love. After Holy Communion each recipient of the Blessed Sacrament can say: "Behold how much my God loves me. At the presefit mo- ment are renewed in me the hap- piness of Mary, the joys of Joseph, the lqrivileges of St. John the Evan- gelist, the favors of Mary Magda- len and the consolations of the Good Thief" Were we to peer more deeply into the hearts of the frequent Communicants as contrasted with the infrequent ones we would be able to note how the element of the supernatural dominates the lives of the Holy Communion- lovers of our Lord, whilst worldli- ness and pagan id'eals so often handicap those lukewarm in this respect. God the Father gives us His Di- vine Son at Holy Communion even as He gave Him to Mary at the moment of the Incarnation. THE LOGICAL CHURCH If we start with faith in the Catholic doctrine that this Church has been founded by Christ, the Son of the living God, and is, therefore, the Church of God, it does not appear diffi- cult to believe and even to understand that it must be logical that is, reasonable. But history tells of minds which, while not perhaps accepting the doctrine of the divine foundation of the Church, have been compelled by the force of their natural reason to admit that the Catholic Church is most logical. In an issue of The Ave Maria we read: "George Eliot was once asked what' church she would have chosen for herself had she been sentenced to make her choice. Her prompt answer was: 'The Catholic because it is the most logical.' What is called the 'logical power f Rome' has appealed to many other non-Catholics. A greater and more con- temporary celebrity, Monad, the learned Protestant divine, as an mshtutmn whose history refers to the Catholic Church ..... has developed itself, through the revolving centuries, with a logical power that at once confounds the reason and ravishes the imagination.' " Does it not seem that there are probably very many persons of high intelligence and deep learning who perceive how very logical the Catholic Church is, that is to say, how rigidly in keeping with reason its claims and teachings are, who yet do not make an act of faith in those teachings and submit to them? True learning and sincere study can bring people quite near, apparently, to believing; to the x, ery threshold, so to say, of the one true fold, who nevertheless do not enter.
