So bear with me until I con- vince you that the parish can profit by putting in a com- munity garden. I'd like to say it was my idea, but thousands of com- munities across the country have taken unused land ad- jacent to city and country property or wide expanses of lawn and turned them into pea i Your Family Shoe Store The Center BANKAMERICARD "Open Monday thru Saturday 9a.m.- 6 p.m. Lokehill Shopping Center-NLR TEOFORD DRUG STORE Rexal I C.B. Or any of the above. I WAS struck by the possibility when I saw it working in our own com- munity. While at our local library last summer, I saw dozens of people working together in an unused patch of land across from the library. In the long sunset hours, apartment dwellers, young and old, men and women, each working his or her own plot, gathered together to work, talk and enjoy a love of growing. Many of them who had lived in the same buildings for years grew to know each other for the first time as they discussed fer- tilizer, bugs and each other's gardens. I suspect these friendships enriched the dreary winter days as well. I know that several got together at har- vest time to can and freeze excess produce for the downtown soup kitchens. In addition, we have an out- reaching restauranteur in our own community who offered the same opportunity to dwellers in a high-rise retirement building near his restaurant. He sees that some unused land next to the shopping center is tilled, fertilized and divided into small plots each year. are furnished. As valuable as this is to others, it pays off big dividends in community building. Much sharing takes place while weeding and watering. I envision a parish with the upkeep and water expenses of a two-acre lawn putting it to better use in these days when so many are in need. I see it inviting people to become an active and visible part of parish life through tilling together. I even see it turning its church kitchens over some Saturdays for canning, freezing and the pleasure that comes from working hard together for others.
