Little Rock Arkansas THE GUARDIAN, APRIL !1. 1952 The Little Girl Who Learned That Surprises Come In Pairs On Easter By Esther Miller Payler "Mother, may I rake the leaves from the flower bed near the porch," "That would be fi,e, Jean, then the yard will look all cleaned up for Easter." Humming a song, Jean went to the garage to get the rake and bushel basket. As she opened the door, a big black eat, with yellow eyes, hopped out. He stood staring at Jean, spittiz, g and bristling his whiskers. "Tom!" screamed Jean. "Go away!" "Jean, what is the matter?" her mother called from the back door. "That big cat. Tom, I'm afraid of--he was standing and spitting at me!" answered Jean, tremb- ling. "You must not be so easily frightened," Jean's mother coun- seled. "He won't scratch as long as you don't bother him." "I'll keep just as far away from him. as I can," Jean with a shiver. Jean raked busily and as th worked she sang. "I wonder what those bunches of soft hairs are," she said aloud, pulling some out of the rake. She began on another pile; the rake stuck. She gave it a tug and a 1 , I bi,g, Obunch of leaves came loose. look!" exclaimed Jean. There, in a hollow next to the porch, was a mother rabbit and four babiesall snuggled up! The mother rabbit was so still that the only way Jean could tell she was alive was by her breath- ing. She was the co'or of the brown earth. The baby rabbits were smaller than Jean's fist. They were in a space shaped like a bowl and lined with rabbit fur. "The leaves were your roor l'll put them back!" Jean apologized. "You can be my Easter raoblts. I won't clean the flower bed," she promised, "not until you grow up!" Jean grabbed the rake to put back the leaves. Just then Tom, the black cat, leaped across the flower bed. He reached his front paw into the rabbit nest! Jean was afraid of the cat, but she did not want to see the tiny bunnies hurt. "Tom!" she shout ed, "go away!" And to be sure that he did, and promptly, she brought the rake down on his head. Tom dropped the baby rabbit and skidded away to safety. Mother came down the path. "What happened?" she asked. "Tom passed like a streak!" "He was going to hurt one of my Easter bunnies!" Jean said. "I was scared of him, but I couldn't let him hurt the baby rabbits; so I chased him away with the rake." "The bunnies are little and if you were afraid of Tom." "May I keep the bunnies in the flower bed and not clean it until they leave?" asked Jean. "Yes," said Mother. "Cover them well so Tom won't find them again." "I'll keep that cat away. I'm not afraid of him anymore." Jean smiled. "Taking care of the rabbits you forgot to be afraid. A good way to keep from getting scared is m be so busy helping others you forget yourself." Mother patted Jean's curls. Jean nodded as she carefully put back the leaves to cover her Easter bunnies. It was an Easter she would al- ways remember baby bunnies as a surprise gift, and learning that she wasn't really afraid of Tom... that is, not anymore.
