Father Connolly's prayer went like this: "Here we are, Lord, your op- pressed broadcasters -- accused of aiding and abetting material- ism, perversion, violence and crime. Easter Greetings To Our Catholic Friends Commonwealth Federal Savings & Loan Ass'n New Orleans (NC) -- The unan- imous re-election of Father Pat- rick O'Malley of Chicago as pres- ident, a call for open accounta- bility of diocesan assets, and an expression of regret that the National .Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) had not been officially represented marked the final day proceedings at the three-day National Federation of Priests Councils convention here. NFPC delegates approved a fin- anclal statement for last year and a $110,000 budget for the coming year, voted to move the organi- zation's permanent office from Chicago to Washington by spring, 1970, and adopted an amendment to their constitution extending the president's term of office to two years, with ability to succeed himself once. Father O'Malley, who ran un- opposed, was elected to another one-year term. Delegates voted to hold the 1970 convention in San Diego and the 1971 convention in Baltimore. Father Joseph O'Donoghue, del- egate of the Association of Wash- ington Priests, disciplined by Patrick Cardinal O'Boyle, took the opening session by storm when he suggested thatthe entire agen- da be scrapped, and all sessions devoted to discussion of such is- sues as birth control, poverty, peace and race. What emerged at the end of the meeting, and what Father O'Don- oghue was said to want most, was a resolution on due process, which he said would bring a great feel- hug of hope for brother priests "who have felt despair that there was no recourse." Because Father O'Donoghue had made the headlines and TV screens, some NFPC delegates were upset, saying their conven- tion was being misrepresented to the public and to the bishops of the United States. Msgr. John Kiley, past presi- dent, Newark Senate of Priests, said: "Father O'Donoghue's words needed to be said, and the ques- tions he raised need to be looked at for solutions. But the agenda does reflect the wishes of the priests of the country made known through a series of provincial meetings. Peace, poverty, race, ecumenism, and other topics are problems best worked out at the grass roots, not at national gath- erings. This meeting can only motivate that action in the areas in which the problem can be met most effectively."
