Incarnate Word Sisters Updating Houston, Texas -- The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, who own and operate St. Michael's Hospital, Texarkana, Ark., have completed a Special Chapter at Villa de Matel, the congregation's motherhouse, aimed at updating the relevance of their work. The six-weeks chapter re- coguized the essentially apostolic and missionary origin and tradition of the congregation, and the spirit of the founding Sisters who wrote more than 100 years ago that "all the afflicted are the objects of the devotion and affection of this reli- gious family." To this end, a Congregation announcement said it "will engage in serious study and research, in consultation with the bishops, in order to discover the will of God for them in today's world, and then seek with wholehearted ded- ication to fulfill that will." Experts in many fields address- ed the chapter, and the congreg- ation revamped its government so that the principles of subsidiarity and collegiality will be exercised at all levels. Accountability as a counterpart of shared responsibil- ity was emphasized, as was less structure and more personal re- sponsibility. Experimentation with the reli- gious habit of the Sisters was arranged, but it will be conducted under controlled procedures so that an easily recognizable habit will be retained.
