It was the Holy Spirit who, from the day of Pen- tecost, helped the Apostles to bearwitness first in Jerusalem and then in various countries of the world of that time. It was he who gave them the strength to bear witness to Christ before the whole people, and, when they were going to face torture for this, he allowed them to rejoice "that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonour for the name (of Jesus)" (Acts 5:41). It was the Holy Spirit who led Paul of Tarsus along the roads of the world of that time. It was the Holy Spirit who sustained Peter in bearing witness to Christ, first in Jerusalem, then in Antioch, and finally here in Rome, the capital of the Empire. This witness was confirmed at the end with martyrdom, as was also the witness of Paul of Tarsus, the great Apostle of the Gentiles. 3. These words which Christ the Lord and Redeemer, Christ the eternal Pastor of souls, addressed to the Apostles before going to the Father, refer to their Suc- cessors, and refer also to all Christians. The Apostles, in fact, are the beginning of the new People of God, as the Council teaches (ef. Ad Gentes, 5). But if all are called to bear witness to the crucified and risen Christ, those after the Apostles who inherited the pastoral and magisterial service in the Church are called in a par- ticular way. How many Successors of Peter in this Roman See have sealed this witness of pastoral and magisterial service with the sacrifice of their life? OAIMJcS IIv shown by the sacred Liturgy when, in the course of the year, it recalls the numerous Sovereign Pontiffs who followed Peter in bearing witness with their blood. It is difficult to speak of these things without deep veneration, without interior emotion. In fact, from the sacrifice of those who bore witness to the crucified and risen Christ, especially during the first centuries, the Mystical Body of Christ in- creased, the Church emerged, became more deeply rooted in souls and consolidated in that ancient world which -- so often -- responded to the good news of the Gospel with bloody persecutions. 4. All those who come to Rome to the "Apostolic Memorials," those who return in the footsteps of St. Peter and St. Paul, should keep all this before their eyes. I, too, am a pilgrim here. I am a foreigner, who, by the will of the Church, has had to remain here and assure the suc- cession in the Roman See after so many great Popes, Bishops of Rome. And I, too, feel my human weakness deeply -- and therefore I repeat the Apostle's words confidently: virtus in in- firmitate perficitur, "My power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Cor 12:9). And therefore, with deep gratitude to the Holy Spirit, I think of that weakness t.hat he per- mitted me to experience since 13 May, believing and humbly trusting that it may have served for the strengthening of the Church and also for the strengthening of my human person. This is the dimension of the divine Trial which it is not easy to reveal to man. It is not easy to speak of it with human words. Yet it is necessary to speak of it. It is necessary to confess with the deepest humility before God and the Church this great grace, which became my portion at that very period when the whole People of God was preparing for a special celebration of Pentecost, dedicated this year to the memory of the First Council of Constantinople -- after 1600 years -- and also of the Council of Ephesus -- after 1550 years. In Ephesus there re-echoed anew, to the advantage of the whole Church of that time, the truth about Christ -- the only- What's Happening Here and There J Dolo Around the DiocelPo ope LITTLE ROCK NEW DlXllCoun A free education program for cancer patients and their families will be held on five consecutive Thursday nights beginning March 4 through April 1 from 7 to 9 P.M. at the Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute, Markham and University. Mary is therefore the true Mother of God (Theotokos). So when, dear brothers and sisters, I meditate with you on the grace received with the threat to my life and the suffering, I turn particularly to her: to her whom we also call "Mother of Divine Grace." And I ask that this grace "not be in vain" tcf. 1 Cot. 15:10) - like every grace man receives: everywhere at any time. I ask that, by means of every grace that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit pour out abundantly, there be born that strength which grows in our weakness. I ask that the witness of Truth and Love, to which the Lord has called us, may also increase and spread. 00iederhehr WINE CELLARS Visit the Southwest's oldest and largest winery.
