During World War If, he joined the Belgian underground and set up an escape system for downed Allied fliers. After the war, his attention turn- ed to the plight of Europe's dis- placed persons. He also set up four homes for aged refugees in Belgium. In 1960, he established the Uni- versity of Peace in Belgium to teach young people from all over the world methods of working for peace. In 1962 and 1967, he founded "Islands of Peace" in Pakistan and India to stimulate rural vil- lagers to help themselves and to promote his ideas for attaining peace. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1958 and Denmark's Son- ning Prize in 1964 for his con- tribution to European culture. .j,, P0N'r ET "/OUR MAU_ END UP N THE DEAD LErrER OFFaCE.
