William Shatner is the politician, and George Grizzard and Reni Santoni cheek things out fo r the police. MONDAY, JANUARY 7 (NBC) - THE DEFIANT ONES (1968) -- Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis topline this action-morality drama about two Deep South convicts who escape from a prison gang but remain chained together. The racial issues are explored with characteristic heavy- handedness by director Stanley Kramer. There's good acting, though. (A-III) (ABC) - F. SCOTT FITZ- GERALD AND THE LAST OF THE BELLES - Aside from the impossible title, this special dramatic film based on writer Fitzgerald's Roaring Twenties lifestyle and some of his early fiction is interesting and oc- ends up wishing he had washed his hands of the whole thing. WEDNESDAY, JAN. 9 (ABC) -- SHOOTOUT IN A ONE-DOG TOWN -- Great title, action-filled but thematically empty Western. The storyline examines the plight of a tiny- town banker faced with a vault full of loot and a ferocious looking gang settling down and casting hungry looks his way. The stars are Jack Elam, Dub Taylor, Richard Egan, Richard Crenna. FRIDAY, JANUARY 11 (CBS) -- HAWAII (1968) - The big, boring movie based on the sweeping epic by James E. Michener. This one, by the way, might not come off too well visually in making the switch from the 70mm Panavision theater screen to your 19" black-and-white tube. Lead roles belong to Max Von Sydow, Julie Andrews, Richard Harris and Jocelyne La Gard. This spectacular makes a travesty of the role of missionaries in converting a people. Harrowing childbirth scene does not im- casionally quite engaging, prove matters. (A-III) There's good period ambience, and Richard Chamberlain as SATURDAY, JANUARY 12 the supposedly dashing F. Scott and Blythe Danner as his wife (NBC) -- NUMBER ONE Zelda, are charming. The segment based on his short fiction, "The Last of the Southern Belles," stars David Huffaman and Susan Sarandon. TUESDAY, JANUARY 8 (ABC) -- DEATH SQUAD -- Robert Forster, Melvyn Douglas and Michelle Phillips star in a detective thriller. The plot serves as the vehicle for several bloody gangland killings. Douglas appears as a retired police captain, sheltering his freshly widowed daughter-in-law, Miss Phillips, who cannot act very well but is highly decorative. (CBS) -- NIGHTMARE -- Richard Crenna, Patty Duke and Vic Morrow inhabit this suspenseful drama about a wishy-washy businessman (Crenna) who gets involved in the investigatioin of a murder he thinks he witnessed, and (1969) -- Charlton Heston plays the aging, once-great quar- terback of the New Orleans Saints. Director Tom Gries does as well as he can orchestrating huddles, plays and the sickening crunch of tackles. Heston's conflict is over whether to quit after some humiliating failures on the field. His career-girl wife is Jessica Walter. ARK. 72207 Anniversary of Abortion Decision to Be Marked Washington (NC) - Materials and program suggestions are being readied by the U. S. Catholic Conference for those dioceses and parishes which plan to observe the Jan. 22 an- niversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision legalizing abortion. The USCC is developing a "model" pastoral message for national release and for distribution to dioceses for local adaptation, according to Bishop James Rausch, general secretary of the USCC. It is also preparing suggestions for public observances and for informational and educational activities concerning abortion and the implications of the Supreme Court ruling. The.Supreme Court decision, Bishop Rausch said, has resulted in the deaths of many Ever Wonder... . . when and by whom laymen were authorized to interpret the Sunday gospel from the lectern? unborn infants. "The pro-life movement in the United States," he said, "must exert every effort to reverse the abortion decisions, both in the law of our land and in the minds and hearts of the American people."
